Interpretation
…secretly throw a heavy stone among them; and they will fight over it like fierce dogs over food and kill one another. And you yourself, hurry to charge into the fight. As far as this ordeal goes, you will carry the fleece from Aea to Greece, far away. Go, all the same, wherever you please, wherever it suits you to go once you have set out."
The last trick is an old one. Mooney: Pherecydes told how Cadmus did the same at Thebes, and the Sown Men, each thinking another had struck him, fought so fiercely that only five survived. καρχαλέοι, "fierce," is related to κάρχαρος, "sharp-toothed," the Iliad's word for hounds (10.360).
Then her tone turns. With the fleece won, he will sail home to Greece, far from Aea: "go, all the same, wherever you please." In the next lines, outside this excerpt, she looks down and wets her cheek with warm tears, grieving that he will wander far over the sea (1063–1066).
