The Book of Isaiah 27.1 · The LORD will punish Leviathan27.1The LORD will punish Leviathan
These chapters (Isaiah 24 to 27) look to the end of the age, when the LORD judges the powers of the earth. After a song of resurrection, the chapter opens with the sea monster brought down.
· · ·
In that day the LORD will punish with his hard, great and strong sword, Leviathan the fleeing serpent and Leviathan the twisting serpent and will kill the dragon that is in the sea.

Here are the ʾăšērîm, the first of only two times Isaiah names them. They stand in a list of made things: altars, “the work of his hands”, and the ḥammānîm, incense stands. In Isaiah an asherah is an object, a carved pole or a planted tree, the kind Deuteronomy 16:21 forbids “beside the altar of the LORD your God”.
Older Canaanite texts from Ugarit know Athirat, the same name, as a goddess, the consort of El and mother of the gods. The Greek Bible hid all of this: here it puts τὰ δένδρα, “the trees”. Elsewhere it usually says ἄλσος, “grove”, which is why the King James Bible speaks of “groves”.
The Greek Bible (Septuagint, Swete 1894): καὶ οὐκ ὄψονται τὰ δένδρα οὐδὲ τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῶν, “and they shall not see the trees, nor their abominations”. the printed page, p. 131
