The Book of Isaiah 44.9 · The makers of idols are nothing44.9The makers of idols are nothing
The satire begins. The prophet turns from the LORD's promises to the people who make idols, and says they are empty, blind and headed for shame.
· · ·
The makers of idols all of them are nothing and their treasures do not help. and their witnesses do not see and do not know, so that they will be ashamed.
The second and last time Isaiah names the ʾăšērîm, and again they are things to break: when the altar stones are crushed like chalk, “asherim and incense stands will not stand”. Jacob’s guilt is atoned for, yəkuppar, the same verb as at the seraph’s coal in 6:7, by tearing down the old shrines.
The Greek again reads οὐ μὴ μείνῃ τὰ δένδρα αὐτῶν, “their trees shall not remain”. A Greek-speaking reader met only trees, never the name of a goddess. Chapters 24 to 27, “the Isaiah Apocalypse”, are usually dated well after the prophet himself.
