Seraphs were standing above him. Six wings, six wings to each one: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

Seraphs were standing above him. Six wings, six wings to each one: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
Interpretation
Seraphs were standing above him. Six wings, six wings to each one: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

Śərāp̄îm are “burning ones”. The same word names the fiery serpents in the wilderness (Numbers 21:6) and the “flying serpent” of Isaiah 14:29 and 30:6. These are not the chubby angels of later art: Isaiah’s seraphs are winged, burning things with faces, hands and feet, and they cover themselves in the presence of the king.

“Feet” (raḡlayim) is also a polite Hebrew word for the private parts (as in Isaiah 7:20). Some readers take the second pair of wings that way: one pair hides the face from God’s glory, one hides the body’s shame.

The Great Isaiah Scroll from Qumran Cave 1, copied in the second or first century BC, about a thousand years before the Leningrad Codex. The right-hand column runs into Isaiah 6 (the line qādôš qādôš qādôš sits low in it); the left opens at 6:8, “Whom shall I send?”1QIsaᵃ · Israel Museum, Jerusalem (Shrine of the Book) · public domain (Google Art Project)
The page this reader’s Hebrew comes from: the Leningrad Codex, folio 222b, Isaiah 5:26 to 7:6, the whole of chapter 6. Copied in Cairo in 1008 or 1009, it is the oldest complete Hebrew Bible.Firkovich B 19A · National Library of Russia, St Petersburg · public domain
