O suspense coletivo ganha um protagonista. De toda a multidão, um homem é tão tomado pela inquietação que se recusa a esperar — antecipa-se, movido por um interesse maior que a mera curiosidade. Dumas ainda não o nomeia, mas o gesto de impaciência já o marca: este é alguém para quem o Pharaon significa muito. É o armador, e o leitor logo o saberá.
