He will hunt her through every town until he has driven her back into Hell, out of which envy first set her loose upon the world.
He will chase the wolf through every town, back into the Hell from which envy first loosed her.
The wolf is finally traced to her source. She came out of Hell, released by <i>’nvidia</i> — Envy — the primal sin, the one that (in Christian tradition) first brought death into the world through the devil's grudge. Greed, then, is envy's offspring, and the hound's task is to send her home.
Dante closes the prophecy with a full circle: the beast that blocks the mountain will be driven back down into the very pit that Dante is about to enter. The road out and the road down turn out to be the same road.
