Virgil gathers the whole revelation into one closing argument: Mary, Lucia, and Beatrice — <i>tre donne benedette</i> — are watching over Dante from the highest court. Against so much love, fear is not merely weakness but ingratitude.
He adds his own pledge: his speech promises great good. The rebuke is finished, and it has done its work by love rather than force. The next tercet shows the effect: a man straightening like a flower in the sun.
