forgave him everything

e a quem eu perdoava tudo,
and to whom I forgave everything,
Gratitude wipes out every grievance against the meddler.
A moment ago José Dias was the informer; now he is absolved of all charges. The pivot is instantaneous, and Machado marks it with the sweeping 'tudo' — everything. Whatever the man's sins of gossip and self-interest, they are cancelled by the single service he has unwittingly done: giving Bento the word for what he feels.
This is the logic of a heart newly in love, which forgives freely because it can afford to. But the reader remembers who José Dias is, and what his meddling has set in motion. The boy's blanket pardon is generous and blind at once; the very man he forgives 'everything' is the one whose talk will keep steering his life, and whose insinuations plant the first seeds of the doubt that ends by ruining it.
