The setting

The old man measures the memory against a whole life.

A note on this passage

The narrator vaults from the boy on the verandah to the old man at his desk, weighing the moment against all the years since. The Portuguese idiom is tender and strange: 'nunca mais me esqueceu' — literally it never forgot me, as if the memory were the loyal party, keeping faith with him rather than he with it. The sensation is granted a will of its own; it stayed.

And nothing ever matched it — 'nem achei que lhe fosse comparavel.' From a man who will tell us of grand passions, marriage, betrayal, and grief, the verdict lands with weight: the peak was this, a boy's first certainty of being loved, before doubt existed. Everything after was measured against it and found lacking. The whole melancholy architecture of Dom Casmurro leans on that quiet comparison, the first thing being also the best.
