Já então morava comigo; posto que minha mãe lhe deixasse uma pequena lembrança, veio dizer me que, com legado ou sem ele, não se separaria de mim. Talvez a esperança dele fosse enterrar-me.
Already then he lived with me; although my mother left him a small remembrance, he came to tell me that, with legacy or without him, he would not separate from me. Perhaps his hope were to bury me.
The narrator recalls that everything that seemed like nothing at the time now comes to mind.
The narrator reflects on a person who lived with him and expressed loyalty despite a small inheritance, possibly hoping to outlive him.
