The boy dodges a second time, and more cunningly. Asked what he wants, he answers with what his mother wants — 'gósto do que mamãe quizer' — folding his will entirely into hers. It is the perfect filial sentence, obedient on its face and empty of self underneath.

Bentinho has learned early the safest posture: want nothing of your own, and no one can catch you wanting the wrong thing. The reply shields Capitú by refusing to name any desire at all. Yet the narrator, decades on, sets it down knowing how false it was — his whole heart was already fixed, and this show of submission was the first of the many concealments by which he protected it. The future subjunctive 'quizer' leaves everything to Dona Glória, and reveals nothing of the boy at all.
