Bentinho — — Quem é?
Who is it?
Bento takes the bait and asks.
Two words, and the trap closes on Bento exactly as it closed on his mother in the earlier chapter, when her 'Que difficuldade?' turned José Dias's news into something she had requested. Now the pattern repeats one generation over: Justina dangles the unnamed 'quem,' and Bento, curious, reaches for it.
The echo is intentional. Machado builds the novel out of these small verbal surrenders, moments when a character, by asking, hands the manipulator the opening they wanted. Bento's short question shows him already caught up in the household's currents, wanting to know who is steering his life even as the knowing draws him deeper in.
