Justina turns to Bentinho's own babyhood as proof of the vow's depth. The diminutive 'pequenino' places him back in the cradle, powerless, at the moment his future was already being announced. His fate was settled before he could speak for it.

The effect is to make the promise feel like a law of nature rather than a human decision that might be undone. If it predates his memory, how could he expect to overturn it now? Yet the same detail carries a quiet cruelty Justina does not notice: a child's whole life arranged around a mother's grief and a mother's bargain with God, the boy himself never once consulted. It is the novel's deep wound, spoken here in passing.
