Justina sets her one condition: she will offer an opinion only if it is requested. The subjunctive 'consultasse' keeps the whole thing safely hypothetical — a favor she would grant in a world where she is asked, which is to say a world she does not expect to arrive.

It is the etiquette of the dependent relative, who must never presume, never volunteer, never overstep. But etiquette here is also armor: by making her help conditional on an invitation that will not come, she guarantees she never has to give it. The curt 'bem' — fine, all right — measures out exactly how little she is prepared to commit. Bentinho hears a yes that is engineered never to be triggered.
