José Dias's parting flourish is a show of discretion: 'I don't ask what it is.' By announcing that he will not pry, he draws attention to the very secret he is respecting — and makes his tact into a kind of intimacy. He signals that he already senses the matter is grave, and that he is the right confidant precisely because he knows when not to ask.

It is a beautifully managed move. Refusing the question is more flattering, and more binding, than asking would be; it tells Bento he is being taken seriously as a man with real business. And the 'perfeitamente' that opens the line is pure José Dias — a small superlative of agreement, sealing the pact with relish. He has accepted a mission whose contents he does not know, on trust, positioning himself as the loyal instrument of whatever the boy intends. The alliance is made.
