The insinuation becomes an invitation. By asking 'Você já reparou nos olhos della?' José Dias makes Bentinho a partner in the scrutiny — no longer a boy being warned, but a young man invited to look, to appraise, to notice what a shrewd elder has already noticed. The question flatters even as it poisons.

Machado's psychology is exact. A charge asserted can be resisted; a charge posed as a question the listener answers for himself becomes his own discovery. José Dias plants the suspicion and lets Bentinho water it. And of course the boy has looked at Capitú's eyes, has loved them; now he is nudged to look again with a stranger's colder attention. The chapter is teaching Bento a way of seeing the person he loves — a way that will never fully leave him, and that decades later, as the old Casmurro, he still cannot set down.
