After all the built confidence, the machine stalls on a single word. 'Mamãe...' and then nothing — the trailing dots mark a throat that closes. Everything the boy has to ask concerns his mother's promise and the seminary, and at the threshold of naming it the poise collapses into the raw child underneath.

Machado stages the whole chapter's turn in one broken word. The little strategist who quoted flattery in guillemets and timed his pauses is suddenly just a frightened son unable to speak of the woman whose vow may take him from the world and from Capitú. The single 'Mamãe' carries the enormous, unspeakable weight of the promise, the priesthood, the threatened future — too much to push past the lips. All the technique of the preceding passages was scaffolding around this one word, and the word will not come out whole.
