com a escolha da protecção
with the choice of protector,
The exact gift Bento thought he was bestowing: naming José Dias his defender.
The word 'protecção' names the whole strategy of the scene. Bento is not merely praising José Dias; he is trying to convert him into an ally in the fight against the seminary, offering him the flattering office of defender. In a household where nearly everything is decided over the boy's head, this is his one attempt to decide something himself — to pick his own champion.
Machado places the abstraction ('the choice of protection') where a warmer word might sit, and the coolness is telling. Bento thinks in terms of appointments and roles, as if love and rescue could be assigned like a post. The irony deepens across the novel: the protections Bento arranges rarely hold, and the man he elevates here will remain, to the end, more weathervane than shield, bending to whatever wind the house's real powers send his way.
