The seduction becomes a map. São Paulo, with its famous law faculty; Pernambuco, with the Recife school; and then the open gesture — 'ou ainda mais longe' — that swings the door all the way out to the horizon José Dias's eyes had already found. He offers Bento distance itself as a gift.

There is a cruelty folded into the generosity that only the whole novel reveals. Distance is the one thing Bento will never be able to bear, because it would mean leaving Capitú, the girl next door who is his real reason for dreading the seminary. José Dias, naming faraway cities as escape, is unknowingly naming the very separation Bento fears most. The map of freedom is also, though no one in the room sees it yet, a map of exile from the person the boy cannot leave.
