He hides. It is the decisive small act: a boy who hears his name and, instead of stepping forward to answer it, slips behind the door to listen. The reflexive 'escondi-me' makes the concealment deliberate and self-directed — he does this to himself. It is the founding gesture of the man he becomes, the one who prefers to watch from cover, to gather evidence in secret, to know things he was never meant to hear. Everything jealous and suspicious in the later Bento is prefigured by this door.
