She closes the history with its point: the bond between the houses is a decade old and rooted in kindness, not a recent contrivance of the children. It is a complete, dignified answer, and for a moment she seems to have the better of it. But the tragedy of the scene is that being right is not the same as prevailing; José Dias needs only to have planted the doubt, and the mother's very thoroughness in refuting him shows how far the doubt has already reached.
