Seguiu-se um alto silencio,
There followed a deep silence,
The room falls quiet.
'Seguiu-se um alto silencio' — a deep silence followed. The word 'alto', literally high, gives the hush a weight and height, a silence you could feel filling the room. After the talk, the politics, the tears, comes this charged pause in which nothing is said and everything hangs — the decision made, the mother weeping, the whole family caught in the aftermath. And into that silence the hidden boy nearly steps, drawn by an impulse he is about to describe and cannot quite name. The scene's tension gathers into stillness.
