Capitu, cosida às saias de minha mãe, não atendia aos olhos ansiosos que eu lhe mandava; também não parecia escutar a conversação sobre o seminário e suas consequências, e aliás decorou o principal, como vim a saber depois.
Capitu, sewn to the skirts of my mother, did not pay attention to the anxious eyes that I sent her; also did not seem to listen to the conversation about the seminary and its consequences, and however memorized the main part, as I came to know afterwards.
The narrator describes Capitu's apparent indifference while clinging to his mother's skirts, not responding to his anxious glances and seemingly not listening to the conversation about the seminary, though she later remembered the main points.
Capitu appeared indifferent and distracted, but later revealed she had absorbed the key details of the conversation.
