The chapter ends on one of Machado's perfect deflations. José Dias has just placed the family 'abaixo de Deus,' below God, and tio Cosme, taking the spatial word at face value, asks: 'Abaixo ou acima?' — below or above? The literal question detonates the flattery, exposing the pious formula as the empty flourish it is, and does it with the flattest possible economy.

Tio Cosme's deadpan marks him at once as the household's skeptic, the man immune to José Dias's superlatives. Where the dependent inflates, the widower's brother-in-law punctures, and the contrast is the comic heart of the Santiago house. The joke is affectionate but exact: it lets the reader see the whole performance from outside, through the eyes of someone who declines to be charmed. After a chapter of watching José Dias polish his phrases, Machado gives us the one listener who simply refuses to play along, and closes on his dry, four-word needle.
