Machado's comedy is at its driest here. Having got his foot into the stirrup, Cosme does not mount — he pauses, and the narrator offers a mock-generous alternative to explain the delay: 'descanço ou reflexão.' The uncertainty is the joke. It may be that the fat man simply needs to catch his breath, or it may be that some meditative dignity has settled over him; the boy watching cannot tell, and the grown narrator preserves the ambiguity with a straight face.

This is characteristic of Casmurro's method throughout the book — the narrator hands us two readings and lets us weigh them. Here the stakes are trivial, a comic warm-up. But the same move, applied later to Capitú's glances and Escobar's friendship, becomes the engine of the novel's terrible uncertainty. The reader learns the trick first on a mule.
