Sabes que esta casa do Engenho Novo, nas dimensões, disposições e pinturas, é reprodução da minha antiga casa de Mata-cavalos. Outrossim, como te disse no capítulo II, o meu fim em imitar a outra foi ligar as duas pontas da vida, o que aliás não alcancei.
You know that this house in Engenho Novo, in its dimensions, arrangements, and paintings, is a reproduction of my old house in Mata-cavalos. Likewise, as I told you in chapter II, my purpose in imitating the other was to link the two ends of life, which however I did not achieve.
The narrator explains that his new house in Engenho Novo is a reproduction of his old house in Mata-cavalos, and that his aim was to link the two ends of life, though he did not succeed.
The narrator reveals that his new house is a copy of his former one, and his intention was to connect the beginning and end of his life, but he failed to do so.
