The need for lived experience

Thus I said to her, the next morning, in her backyard, recalling the words of the eve, and throwing in her face, for the first time, the joy that she had shown since my entry into the seminary, when I lived seasoned with longings.
The narrator reflects that street cries and seminary pamphlets are not enough; one must have known and suffered the cases, people, and sensations in time, otherwise everything is silent and colorless.
The narrator confronts a woman the morning after, accusing her of showing joy at his entry into the seminary while he was suffering from homesickness.
