A whole life in four words: 'aqui viveu e morreu'. Machado compresses the tenor's biography to its two irreducible facts and lets the ellipsis carry the silence after death. It is a miniature of the novel's own great subject — a life reduced, in the end, to the span between two verbs.

The trailing dots do quiet work. They let the old man Bento pause over the dead singer, and over the fact that the giver of the maxim has himself reached the last curtain the aphorism predicts. There is affection and a touch of self-recognition in it: the narrator, too, is old, also drawing near the end of his opera, which is perhaps why the tenor's cheap-sounding wisdom has stayed with him all these years.
