So everything was made ready for their departure: a large ship, and sailors ready to put out to sea. The provisions were loaded aboard: much clothing of many colors, much silver and gold, and an abundance of food beyond measure.
Book 1, chapter 10. The two families fit out a ship for the voyage abroad.
The list shows how rich the two families are, and the riches matter to the plot. At Rhodes a crew of Phoenician pirates learns that the ship carries "gold and silver and many valuable slaves" (1.13.1), and they decide to attack it (1.13.2).
