Ἐν τούτῳ ⟦τῷ χρόνῳ⟧ ἔκειντο ἄθυμοι, πολλὰ προσδοκῶντες, ἀλλήλοις διαλεγόμενοι, συνεχὲς ὀμνύοντες τηρήσειν τὰ συγκείμενα.

In the meantime they lay disheartened, expecting many things, talking with each other and swearing again and again to keep what they had agreed.

The setting

Book 1, chapter 16. Habrocomes and Anthia are captives on a pirate chief's estate near Tyre, and two of the pirates have just agreed to win them over.

A note on this passage

τὰ συγκείμενα, "what had been agreed," points back to the oaths they swore to each other on the voyage from Samos (1.11.4–6): she would stay pure for him and accept no other man, and he would live with no other woman. σύγκειμαι is used as the passive of συντίθημι, the verb of the pirates' own pact a moment before (συντίθενται, 1.15.6), so the lovers' agreement and the pirates' are named with one verb. The editor prints τῷ χρόνῳ, "at that time," but marks the words for deletion; ἐν τούτῳ alone already means "meanwhile," and the English reads around them.
