Those in the procession went past in a line: first the sacred objects, the torches, the baskets and the incense; after these came horses, dogs and hunting gear, (words lost) thus for war, but most for peace. (Words lost.) Each of the girls was adorned as if for a lover.

The setting

Book 1, chapter 2. The order of the procession; the only manuscript has lost words here.

A note on this passage

Words are lost twice in this section: they are missing from the only manuscript, and the editor marks each gap with asterisks. The grammar shows what the second gap held. ἑκάστη, "each," is feminine, so the lost words must have brought the girls into the procession. The κανᾶ were the sacrificial baskets that held the barley and the knife (Aristophanes, Peace 948), and in Athens carrying one in a procession was an honor for a girl (Thucydides 6.56).
