Ἄνθεια δὲ πάντα πένθος ἦν, καὶ εἴ ποτε δυνηθείη πεῖσαι τοὺς ἐπὶ τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου, εἰσῄει πρὸς Ἁβροκόμην λανθάνουσα καὶ κατωδύρετο τὴν συμφοράν.
Anthia was all grief, and whenever she could persuade the men in charge of the prison, she went in to Habrocomes without being seen and lamented their misfortune.

The setting
Book 2, chapter 7. Anthia is still a slave in Apsyrtus' household while Habrocomes is held in chains.
A note on this passage
πάντα πένθος ἦν, "she was all grief," uses a noun where English would want an adjective, as if Anthia had become grief itself. πένθος is above all the mourning for the dead: Herodotus uses it for the mourning Cyrus ordered for his wife Cassandane (Herodotus 2.1). When she reaches the prison, she speaks to Habrocomes as to a man who will die there (2.7.5).
