One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a wood;
Numa bela tardinha, uma jovem princesa pôs a touca e os tamancos, e saiu para passear sozinha num bosque;
O conto abre com uma cena simples e luminosa — uma jovem princesa saindo de casa.
O conto começa sem cerimônia, como quem abre uma porta: uma tarde bonita, uma menina, um bosque. A princesa sai «by herself» — sozinha — e é essa solidão despreocupada que abre espaço para o encontro estranho que vem a seguir. Nos Grimm, o maravilhoso quase sempre entra por um gesto comum: calçar os tamancos e ir andar.
