The avenging daimon — appetite as its own hell

But from the foolish and evil and wicked and envious and greedy and murderers and impious I am far off, having yielded them to the avenging daimon, who, applying the sharpness of fire, smites them through the senses and arms them the more for lawless deeds, so that they may meet with greater punishment; and he does not cease, stirring their desire insatiably upon boundless appetites, as in a fight in the dark, and so torments them, and increases the fire upon them still more.

The setting

The dark mirror of I.22. From the foolish, evil, envious, greedy, murderers, and impious the Nous stays far, having yielded them to the avenging daimon. That daimon assails them with the sharpness of fire through the senses, arms them for still more lawlessness so they earn greater punishment, and stirs their desire insatiably 'as in a fight in the dark,' increasing the fire upon them.

A note on this passage

The mercy of I.22 has a shadow, and the Hermetic hell is psychologically exact. The Nous simply withdraws from the vicious and 'yields' them to the avenging daimon (τιμωρὸς δαίμων) — abandonment, not active cruelty from Mind. But the daimon's punishment is diabolical in its logic: it does not merely burn, it arms them 'the more for lawless deeds,' so their sin deepens and earns worse — damnation as a debt compounding itself.

The undercurrent is that the torment is the desire itself. The daimon 'stirs their appetite insatiably (ἀκορέστως) upon boundless cravings, as in a fight in the dark (σκοτομαχία).' Hell here is not a place but a state — endless craving that can never see or reach its object, the appetite of I.18-19 turned into a fire that only grows the more it is fed. The interlinear keeps the terrible image intact: the wicked flailing in the dark after wants that consume them.
