“That Light am I, Nous, your god” — the Word, son of God

Poimandres said to me: Did you understand what this vision means? I shall know, I said. That light, he said, am I, Nous, your god, who was before the watery nature that appeared out of darkness; and the luminous Word from Nous is the son of God. What then? I said. Know it thus: what sees and hears in you is the Word of the Lord, and the Nous is Father, God; for they are not parted from one another, since their union is Life. I thank you, I said. But now contemplate the Light and come to know this, he says.

The setting

Poimandres interprets the vision. The Light is Nous itself — 'I, Nous, your god'; the luminous Word that comes from Nous is 'the son of God.' And the same structure lives in the human being: what sees and hears in you is the Word of the Lord; the Nous is Father — and because they are never parted, 'their union is Life.'

A note on this passage

This is the theological crown of the opening. The Light Hermes loved is now named: it is Nous, God himself. And what proceeds from Nous — the 'luminous Word' — is called υἱὸς θεοῦ, son of God. A Greek text of the 2nd century is running the Father–Son–Word vocabulary that the Gospel of John made famous, and the interlinear lets the reader see the shared terms rather than take the parallel on trust.

The undercurrent is that this cosmic structure is also a map of the self. 'What sees and hears in you is the Word of the Lord' — the faculty of perception in the human being is the same Logos, and the Nous is its Father. Because Father and Son 'are not parted,' their oneness is not a doctrine but a life: ἕνωσις γὰρ τούτων ἐστὶν ἡ ζωή, 'their union is Life.' To know this is not to learn a fact but to find the divine already at work in one's own seeing and hearing.
