He asked this expecting to be the most blessed of men; but Solon, with no flattery at all, keeping to the truth, says: "O king, Tellus of Athens."

A note on this passage

Herodotus spells out Croesus's motive in so many words: he asked "expecting to be the most blessed of men." Then Solon answers, and the verb switches to the present, legei, "he says," as if the reader were in the room. He answers tōi eonti chrēsamenos, "making use of what is": keeping to the facts, not to the king's wishes.

The answer is a name no one has heard of. Tellon Athēnaion, "Tellus, an Athenian." Not a king, not a hero, not anyone Croesus could have envied. The shock is in the smallness of it, and in two words: after the parade of gold, the most blessed man Solon has seen is a private citizen of a city the king hardly thinks about.
