«Ele não tem esse direito!» começou o Pai Lobo com raiva — «Pela Lei da Selva ele não tem direito de mudar seus aposentos sem o devido aviso.
O Pai Lobo, furioso, invoca a Lei contra o tigre invasor.
A primeira reação do Pai Lobo não é medo, é indignação legal: «ele não tem esse direito». Na Selva há uma Lei, e mudar de território sem aviso a quebra. Kipling mostra que os bichos não vivem no caos — vivem sob um pacto antigo, e é em nome desse pacto que o lobo se enfurece.
