The setting
Telemachus begins his reply. He promises to speak frankly, then gives a startlingly honest answer to the question of his parentage: his mother says he is Odysseus's son, but he himself cannot be sure. The block ends mid-sentence, on the boy's doubt.
A note on this passage
Telemachus opens with the same promise of frankness the stranger used, then keeps it almost too well. Asked if he is Odysseus's son, he does not simply say yes. His mother says so; as for himself, he cannot know — no one, he is about to add, ever knows his own begetting for certain.
The honesty is bleak and revealing. The boy has no father to point to, only Penelope's word and a name he has never been able to test. In a poem obsessed with lineage and true return, its first young voice answers the question of identity with a shrug of doubt. The block breaks off on that unfinished 'but I' — the exact pitch of a son who has never been sure of the man he is measured against.
