And when the sun set and darkness came on, then we slept on the seabeach. And when early-born rosy-fingered Dawn appeared, then I called an assembly and spoke before all.

The setting

After a day's feast and a night's sleep on the shore of Aeaea, a new day breaks and Odysseus gathers his men to speak.

A note on this passage

Sunset, sleep on the beach, then dawn — the poem's standard machinery for moving from one day to the next. At first light Odysseus calls the men together and rises to speak before them all.

'Rosy-fingered Dawn' arrives on schedule, serene and formulaic, over a crew who have just watched eleven ships destroyed. The fixed epithet keeps its calm beauty while the men it wakes are broken with fear, and the grim speech that follows lands against that unbothered light.
