But my comrades talked to one another with words, and said that I was carrying home gold and silver, gifts from great-hearted Aeolus, son of Hippotas. And thus one would say, looking at a nearby fellow:

The setting

Odysseus has fallen asleep from exhaustion within sight of Ithaca. His crew does not know the bag Aeolus gave him holds the winds.

A note on this passage

While Odysseus sleeps, the crew turns the gift over in their minds. They assume the bag Aeolus gave him is full of gold and silver, treasure their captain means to keep for himself.

The suspicion is the old wound of the whole return. Men who have followed Odysseus for ten years still do not trust him, and he has not told them what the bag holds. The secrecy that kept the winds safe is exactly what will doom them.
