A hymn to Persephone. Persephone, daughter of great Zeus, come, blessed one, only-begotten goddess, and receive the welcome offerings,
Interpretation
A hymn to Persephone. Persephone, daughter of great Zeus, come, blessed one, only-begotten goddess, and receive these welcome offerings,
This hymn has no incense note, only its title. Persephone is mounogeneia, "only-begotten," the one daughter of her parents. Hesiod uses the same word for Hekate, an only child, and the Gospel of John uses it for Christ, "the only-begotten of the Father." Here it marks Persephone as the one child of Zeus and Demeter.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Proserpine, 1882. Oil on canvas. Proserpine, the Roman name for Persephone, holds the pomegranate whose seeds bound her to the underworld; this is the last version of the picture, finished in the year Rossetti died.Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, 1927P7 · public domain (CC0, Birmingham Museums Trust; via Wikimedia Commons)
