Interpretation
Of Tyche. Incense: frankincense. Come here, Tyche: I call you, good fulfiller of prayers, gentle goddess of the roads, for rich possessions,
Tychē is the everyday Greek word for what befalls a person: chance, luck, good or bad. In the cities of the Hellenistic and Roman world she became a great goddess, and many cities honored their own Tyche, shown wearing a crown in the shape of city walls. This hymn asks for her good side, the "good fulfiller of prayers," and gives her the title enoditis, "of the roads," which belongs to Hekate, called "of the roads" in the first hymn of the book.
Edward Burne-Jones, The Wheel of Fortune, 1875 to 1883. Oil on canvas. Fortune, whom the Greeks called Tyche, turns her huge wheel, and the men bound to it rise and fall: a slave at the top, a king below him, a poet at the bottom.Musée d'Orsay, RF 1980 3 · public domain (via Wikimedia Commons)
