Interpretation
But, blessed one, I pray you to tell me the messages of the gods, so that you may always come near with right counsels in all things, showing no one signs of evil in strange forms.
The singer asks for the good kind of dream: clear messages from the gods, and no allokota, strange and monstrous images that leave a sleeper afraid and unsure what they mean. Reading such images was a profession. In the second century AD Artemidorus of Daldis, a town in Lydia not far from where these hymns were probably sung, wrote a whole handbook on interpreting dreams, and it survives.
