Ἐν ταῖς ἱστορίαις τῶν δώδεκα φυλῶν τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἦν Ἰωακείμ, πλούσιος σφόδρα, καὶ προσέφερε τὰ δῶρα αὐτοῦ διπλᾶ, λέγων· Ἔσται τῆς περιουσίας μου παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, καὶ τὸ τῆς ἀφέσεώς μου κυρίῳ εἰς ἱλασμὸν ἐμοί.
The book opens like an Old-Testament chronicle. Joachim — Mary's father, unnamed in the New Testament — is introduced as a rich and pious man who doubles his offerings, giving one share to the people and one to God.
