They hid from the presence of the Lord

Καὶ ἤκουσαν τὴν φωνὴν Κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ περιπατοῦντος ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τὸ δειλινόν· καὶ ἐκρύβησαν ὅ τε Ἀδὰμ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ ξύλου τοῦ παραδείσου.
God's daily visitation, "walking in the garden in the cool of the day" (τὸ δειλινόν, the late-afternoon breeze), had presumably been an unremarkable, even welcome, rhythm before. Now the same sound provokes concealment — a second technology of shame, hiding, following the first (aprons). "From the presence (πρόσωπον, lit. ‘face’) of the Lord" acknowledges what every later flight from God assumes and cannot achieve: that his presence can be evaded by distance or foliage.
