Αὕτη ἡ βίβλος γενέσεως ἀνθρώπων. ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν Ἀδάμ, κατ᾽ εἰκόνα θεοῦ ἐποίησεν αὐτόν·
The genealogy opens by echoing the exact formula of 2:4, “Αὕτη ἡ βίβλος γενέσεως…” (“This is the book of the generation of…”) — there, of heaven and earth; here, of humankind. The same phrase, βίβλος γενέσεως, is what later gives Matthew’s Gospel its own opening words (Matt 1:1, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ”), fitting a genealogy of its own to the same ancient pattern. The verse then folds in, almost verbatim, the two summarizing clauses of 1:27 (humankind made “according to the image of God”): this chapter’s whole long chain of begetting begins from that single fact.
