καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεός Οὐ μὴ καταμείνῃ τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτοὺς σάρκας· ἔσονται δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι αὐτῶν ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἔτη.
God’s first verdict on the situation: a limit is set on human life, either a hard ceiling of 120 years or (as many readers ancient and modern have taken it) a grace period counting down to the Flood itself — the text does not disambiguate. σάρκας, “flesh”, names the reason: mortality, the creature’s perishable nature, not the strange union of v.2 as such. Κύριος renders the divine name יהוה (YHWH), the LXX’s standing convention since Genesis 2.
