ὦ τέκνα, Κάδμου τοῦ πάλαι νέα τροφή,
Aristotle called this play the model of tragedy. It opens with the king coming out of his palace to a crowd of citizens who sit as suppliants at his door. He calls them "children" — the first word of a play in which no one’s true parentage is what it seems.
