ὁ πᾶσι κλεινὸς Οἰδίπους καλούμενος.
The line lands on his name. "Famous Oedipus" — the audience knows, as he does not, everything the name already tells: Οἰδίπους, "swollen-foot," from the ankles pierced when he was exposed as an infant.
