— Parei o cavallo, e disse: « Ólé! ha novidade?» Logo que me não responderam, saltei para terra; mas ainda eu tinha um pé no estribo quando me fizeram fogo.

I stopped the horse and said: «Hello! anything wrong?» The moment they didn't answer, I leapt down; but I still had one foot in the stirrup when they fired on me.
